Test Of English for International Communication

The Test Of English for International Communication (TOEIC) exam was created by the US non for profit Educational experts ETS - the educational organization that also created the more widely known TOEFL exam.

The former is primarily a work related exam and designed to tests the English proficiency of those candidates who need English for work related reasons. The exam can be taken independently of the writing, reading and listening tests. Furthermore, an organization or institution may wish to purchase its own test for internal use.

Questions 1 & 2

In this part of the test the candidate must read a text of about 100 words aloud.

Focus:
  1. Pronunciation.
  2. Intonation and stress.
  3. Ability to speak clearly.

Duration: 45 seconds preparation time / 45 minutes delivery.

Question 3

In this part of the test, the candidate will describe a picture.

Focus:
  1. Ability to describe.
  2. Use modal verbs, present simple and continuous tenses as well as descriptive adjectives.

Duration: 30 seconds preparation time / 45 seconds speaking time.

Questions 4 to 6

In this part of the test the candidate will answer three questions. They respond to each question after hearing a beep.

Duration: No preparation time / 15 seconds to respond to questions 4 and 5 / 30 seconds to respond to question 6.

In this part of the test the candidate will need to answer three questions. However, they will need to extract their answers from information provided. They respond to each question after hearing a beep.

Focus: Ability to interpret information in English.

Duration: 30 seconds to read the information / 15 seconds response time to questions 7 and 8 / 30 seconds response to question 9.

Question 10

In this part of the test, the candidate will be presented with a problem and then asked to propose a solution.

Focus: Ability to speak uninterrupted.

Duration: 30 seconds preparation / 60 seconds to speak.

Question 11

In this part of the test, you will give your opinion about a specific topic.

Focus: Express opinions in English.

Duration: 15 seconds preparation / 60 seconds to speak.
